Question: How do I obtain an Illinois Cosmetology License?
Answer: In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, nail technology, or esthetics in the state of Illinois, students must complete the requirements listed below. When getting an Illinois cosmetology license, there really is no incorrect way to go about training as long as you have completed your coursework at an Illinois cosmetology school.
As stated by the Illinois (IL) State Board of Cosmetology, to get an Illinois cosmetology license, one must have attended an Illinois cosmetology school or when transferring into the state, the PA Board of Cosmetology, requires you to meet their guidelines.
After finishing your training, you are required to pass a licensing exam issue by the Illinois (IL) State Board of Cosmetology. Once passing you will receive your Illinois cosmetology license. You’re now able to work in the state of Illinois. Keep in mind, just because you received your IL cosmetology license you may want to consider continuing education to further get full utilization from your IL cosmetology license. Answer: The Illinois (IL) State Board of Cosmetology requires the following number of hours of training for each specialty below:

COSMETOLOGIST: 1500 hours
ESTHETICIAN: 750 hours
NAIL TECHNICIAN: 350 hours
Illinois Board of Cosmetology Additional Requirements
All applicants must be at least 16 years of age. Each applicant must have a minimum 8th grade education. If an applicant does not have a high school diploma or its’ equivalent they must take an Ability to Benefit test.
Question: How do I transfer my license from another state?
Answer: Based on laws in issuing state compared to Illinois Law during the time period in which the applicant was licensed. The state does credit the applicant for work experience. Home salon and Mobile salon allowed.
