South Carolina License Information

South Carolina Board of Cosmetology license requirements:

  • COSMETOLOGY: 1500 hours
  • ESTHETICS: 450 hours
  • NAIL TECHNOLOGY: 300 hours

Reciprocity: This is granted to applicants who have completed the same requirements as South Carolina. You may have to pass the national exam.

General South Carolina Cosmetology License Requirements for All Cosmetology and Barbering Applicants
All applicants applying for a South Carolina cosmetology license must meet the following requirements:

  • Take and pass a written and practical exam
  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have at least a 10th grade education or equivalency
  • Submit an application
  • Pay the prescribed fee

South Carolina Cosmetology License Requirements for Applicants Licensed in Another State

Any person licensed to practice barbering, hairdressing/cosmetic therapy, manicuring or esthetics in another state where the requirements are the equivalent of those of this state, shall be entitled to a license for barbering, cosmetician, manicurist or esthetician, upon the acceptance of his or her credentials by the Department. The applicant must have satisfactorily passed a written and practical examination administered by the South Carolina Department or from another state board.
