As stated by the South Dakota (SD) State Board of Cosmetology, to get a SD cosmetology license, one must have attended a South Dakota cosmetology school or when transferring into the state, the SD Board of Cosmetology, requires you to meet their guidelines. After finishing your training, you are required to pass a licensing exam issue by the South Dakota (SD) State Board of Cosmetology.
Once passing you will receive your South Dakota cosmetology license. You’re now able to work in the state of South Dakota. Keep in mind, just because you received your SD cosmetology license you may want to consider continuing education to further get full utilization from your SD cosmetology license. Question: How much training is required?
Answer: The South Dakota Cosmetology Commission shall issue a license to any person who meets the following requirements:
• 18 years or older
• Evidence of completion of high school or GED
• Submission of application to Cosmetology Commission

• Passage of 3 examinations - NIC national written, NIC national practical, and South Dakota state laws
Required hours of education from an approved South Dakota cosmetology school are as follows:
COSMETOLOGY: 2100 hours
ESTHETICS: 600 hours
NAIL TECHNOLOGY: 400 hours
Question: How do I transfer my license from another state?
Answer: You may become a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician or nail technician in South Dakota through reciprocity if your current state license has equal or greater requirements than South Dakota. (If you do not have a current license, then you should apply as an out-of-state student.)
